        What is De-carbonization?

Petrol and diesel engines build up carbon deposits inside the cylinders over a period of time. This carbon build up happens due to various reasons – from improper burning of fuel to substandard fuel quality and general build up with age. It deposits itself as soot around exhaust valves, in the exhaust, on the cylinder head, piston and intake and exhaust manifold. 

Over a period of time, especially in older cars, this carbon build up can lead to valves not closing properly, spark plugs fouling, exhaust sensors failing and other issues. Some of the first symptoms of carbon build up will include a lack of power and low mileage from the Vehicles. Severe cases will also show up as black soot deposits spilling out of the exhaust. 

Carbon build up happens over a period of time. Usually the best time to decarbonize an engine is after it has run about 25,000kms to 30,000Kms. This is a preventive maintenance procedure. 

Decarbonized the diesel engine after too long time (i.e. 80K or more kms) may cause loss of compression if the treatment is carried out on any other machines except ACT Machine, because of sudden removal of carbon from ring & piston which form a tight seal compensating for the wear & tear of metal due to long usage. 

Apart from this, on other hand too frequent de-carbonization as many companies recommend is waste of money & it damages the engine due to chemical process. In ACT Machine treatment, neither any Chemical is used nor any part of the engine opened.



There are four ways in which an Engine can be decarbonized: 

Chemical De-carbonization: 

Chemical de-carbonization involves running a chemical compound along with the fuel through the engine to breakdown carbon deposits. This then gets flushed out along with the exhaust gases. There are a couple of ways in which this is done. One way is to add the chemical along with some fuel in a separate unit that is connected to the fuel intake line on the car. The engine is started and the car is allowed to run for 15-20 minutes or until the mixture is fully utilized. This applies to both petrol and diesel engines. 

This method of de-carbonizing the engine is alright only as a preventive maintenance routine. Doing this every 30,000kms to 35,000Kms or so will prevent carbon build up in the engine and keep it clean. The only disadvantage is if, by mistake the person who carries out the job adds more chemical in the fuel during this process may result in permanent damage to the engine. Further, if the process is done more frequently it reduces the engine life. So many Technical Experts do not recommend the same. Please keep in mind that this process is also Harmful for Environment. 

Physical De-carbonization: 

For engines that have severe carbon build up, a chemical de-carbonization won't be quite effective. In this case, one will need to do a physical de-carbonization procedure. This involves opening up the cylinder head, removing the intake and exhaust valves and physically “scrapping” the carbon deposits off the valves, cylinder head and manifolds. The exhaust pipe will also need to be dismantled and cleaned thoroughly using high-pressure water. If the exhaust muffler is clogged with carbon deposits, sometimes it will need to be heated and tapped out, before flushing with water. 

This de-carbonization procedure is expensive as it involves higher labour costs as well as for this types of process the vehicle is off road for few days. Further, with this process the vehicle warranty also gets void. Again for this process highly skilled persons are required. 

Do it your Self System: 

There is some self-Made System that you could use to keep the engine in good health and to prevent carbon build up. This is useful only for older carburettor driven cars as well as older diesel engines by using a fine water mist. This process is not suitable for MPFI Cars or the cars with ECM. This involves removing the air filter and spraying a fine mist of water using a household spray bottle over the intake while the engine is in running condition. The water would form steam in the cylinders and resort to a sort of “steam cleaning” of the engine. This process is dangerous as it can ruin an engine if done improperly, leading the engine to seize up! Hence this process is not recommended ideally. 

GIRIRAJ IEOHHO De-Carbonization System:

The Technology of Ionized Electrolytic Ortho Hydrogen & Oxygen (IEOHHO) De-carbonization system was developed by us in the year 2001 & the same was patented by Sunil S. Dharaiya (Owner of GIRIRAJ  ELECTRONICS).
